What does Living My Best Life even mean? A simple google search returned 2.2 billion results. Clearly there are SEVERAL interpretations of this popular phrase! Top of the list resulted in Lil’ Duval and Snoop, Cardi B and Chance the Rapper who have songs with with lyrics about Living My Best Life. Now, this phrase is most certainly subjective and very broad. According to the urban dictionary, it is a term generally used when having fun, relaxing, or a depressed person crying all day because they think life sucks. According to society, this viral phrase that has taken over tha culture you may get the definition twisted. Society deems living your best life as traveling the world, getting that six figure job, having a grand wedding or attaching yourself to some tangible thing to show off to others. Yes we all want to live “that” best life. As I began to dig a little deeper to see where this viral craze began, it lead me back to a book from 2002 by Laura Berman Fortgang, titled Living Your Best Life: Discover Your Life’s Blueprint for Success. Ok, but then I came across none other than the O Magazine as in Oprah magazine, cover titled issue Live Your Best Life: A Treasury of Wisdom, Wit, Advice, Interviews, from O, The Oprah Magazine. She is referred to by many as one of the most influential women in the world. Now I know Oprah is BALLIN and all but I am pretty sure her intentions for Live Your Best Life has nothing to do with the way we are using it today!! I ain’t going back and forth with you on that, so pull up a chair and let’s chat.
What does it mean
As mentioned above Oprah coined the phrase in 2005, Live Your Best Life on her O magazine cover. She also hosted a weekend event around the theme, Live Your Best Life. In case you didn’t know, Oprah is all about inspiring others to be the best version of themselves. Oprah believes that, ” there’s a calling for all of us. I know that every human being has value and purpose. The real work of our lives is to become aware. And awakened. To answer the call.” Yes auntie Oprah, yes auntie!!! FACTS!!! What is your purpose? The infamous #livingmybestlife on Instagram returns 2.6 million posts. Take a scroll down the feed and you will see people on beaches, couples, kids, pets, houses, food, and people that look like they are enjoying life to the fullest. All that is GREAT but have you ever thought about what this phrase really means. What if I told you that living your best life meant finding your purpose? It means to figure out what you were meant to do here on earth and find a way to do it. Nothing in life is more important than your purpose and your calling. Use the struggles of your past to stumble across your purpose and your passion! Someone somewhere needs You!
What’s the Criteria
Ayeee!!! I’m so glad you asked. Yes, I’m always down for a good turn up, traveling, and having a great time. However, when the music stops and the vacation is over I am slapped in the face again with my reality. The reality of life and that ish happens. Ask yourself am I truly the best version of myself? Will you seek your purpose even though you have pain? Are you afraid to pursue passion because of your past? The criteria for living your best life begins with “YOU” making sure you are emotionally healthy in order to give to others! You can’t pour from an empty cup! Figure out what lights your soul on fire. Figure out what is most important to you. What brings joy to your soul? Who will you help and give back to? If traveling is the only thing that makes you happy then it’s time to soul search. Traveling is simply taking a break to enjoy a different atmosphere NOT escape life. If you find yourself always in a depressed state it’s time to soul search. The most important criteria in living your best life is YOU being your best self. What is stopping you? Change it! You are in control of your own destiny! “Change is good for any us!” Says one of my favorite rappers, Tupac. Go ahead and do your thang nobody will be mad at cha, except for maybe a few haters but so what!
What They Don’t Tell You
You will be fooled into believing that everyone has figured out the magic formula to life when you are on social media. Spoiler alert: When you look at Instagram and Facebook pics and post of others they are JUST pictures/posts. Remember everyone is not who they “post” to be. People show you the best version of themselves on social media. Take away the filters, the good lighting (learned that this is ever-ry-thing from my daughter), the scenery, and see them out in these here streets. Have one conversation with them you will notice they aren’t indeed living their best life. Maybe they were at that particular moment of the photo. I am not saying that in order to live your best life, everything will be perfect. What I am saying is that you have to be happy with where you are and not just sitting around complaining about things you won’t change! However, just because you don’t go on as many trips as someone, your DM or inbox isn’t popping, your Instagram page isn’t as interesting as theirs does NOT mean your life is worthless and boring. Know where you are and do what is best for you. We all have struggles, we all have stress, and we all have insecurities. You don’t know what is behind the mask of that person’s smile.
Keep #livingmybestlife! Keep posting your pics! In the words Snoop Dog and Lil’ Duval, “keep breathin and achievin’.” I say keep doing whatever makes you happy and brings you JOY! BUT know that when the party is over, everyone has returned home, and you and your thoughts are alone, who are you then? Are you pursuing your passion and purpose in life? Are you really living your BEST Life or your BEST Lie? Are you spending money you don’t have to impress people who don’t care? I say live your life to the FULLEST. If you aren’t happy with an aspect of your life, change it! If you can’t change it, change the way you see it! Learn a new skill or hobby. Take a class to continuously grow and become self-aware! There is always room for growth and improvement. Surround yourself with people that will pull you up, encourage you, and inspire you! The biggest adventure you can take in life is to live the life you dreamed of!
Bottom Line: The most important aspect of Living Your Best Life is YOU being the best version of YOU!
